New Labs Feature: Google Analytics Integration

Holy smokes Batman! You can now add a Google Analytics dashboard to your sites!

So, as the screenshot above would suggest, we just released a new feature into the wild: PageLime CMS Google Analytics Integration. This is the first of many experimental (labs) features, that is now available. To enable Google Analytics Integration, go to the Features area for a particular site, and click on the button next to Google Analytics on the right:

Site Features: Labs

Once enabled, the Google Analytics feature allows you to connect your site to a Google Analytics account, and thus offer users an analytics dashboard right on their home screen. When you enable the feature, on the site home screen Administrators will get a note with further instructions on how to complete the integration (the integration is a 2 step process that takes about 3 minutes).

  1. Make sure to add analytics@pagelime.com as an authorized user to the Google Analytics profile associated with this site.
  2. If you are still not able to pull your analytics up, make sure to update the analytics tab on your site settings with the correct Analytics Profile ID

Once you’re up and running, your users will see the analytics dashboard, which includes the following:

  1. An Analytics Summary of data over the past 30 days forĀ Visits, Visitors, Average Time on Site, and the Bounce Rate. Each with a rate indicating the percent change since last month.
  2. A Site Visits chart with interactive data points. (NO flash required!)
  3. A Site Visits by State (US only for now) heatmap breakdown of visits.

The dashboard appears right below the site actions, and even on a 1024×768 resolution the Analytics Summary is still visible above the fold:

  2. Awesome Feature! I would also like to see sitemap creation built in, if its not already.

  3. Nice feature!

(The normal GUI for GA blows big time)

This looks like a really nice feature, unfortunately I’ve attempted to enable analytics but seem to be getting spinning loading icons rather than the correct data.

You’ve mentioned, “When you enable the feature, on the site home screen Administrators will get a note with further instructions on how to complete the integration (the integration is a 2 step process that takes about 3 minutes).”

I received no note instructing me on how to complete the integration. This may be my issue?

  5. Ritchie says:

Nice feature, however it is US centric. Can the map be changed to non-US country? Also i get NaN (not a number) error on the avg time and bounce rate percentages.

  6. Emil says:

Ritchie – you’re right here, but unfortunately implementing for other countries has been more challenging than we expected. When we polish this up and the feature graduates from the labs, we will have more options for our international users.

  7. Ilja says:

    Thx for this nice feature!

  8. Evan says:

I would like to see refer data displayed instead of the state by state. Or just along side.

  9. Neil says:

    Hello,

    Liking this so far :-)

We are a UK based company so it will be good for our customers to see something less US centric (e.g. Visitors by States is no use to us). Hopefully once the feature is out of ‘experimental’, international options will be available

Also, be good to see get the keywords and traffic sources included as well, that way for less PC savvy customers can see the core stats for their Analytics without having to have their own Google account login. We set up seperate GA profiles for each website we do.

  10. Emil says:

Neil, in addition to being a Pagelime superstar and all around awesome guy (and probably more handsome since you started using Pagelime), you bring up a good point. We’re working on graduating analytics from the labs to a full feature, and it’s going to come with a lot more goodies. I’ll add your feedback to the project plan.

  11. Bastian says:

I think this is very cool, but there is only one problem…. My client’s getting confuse if they see map of America in “my” cms -program.
Here in Europea we are not so interested if 0,001% of visitors coming from America…. is there going to be changes ?

  12. Brent says:

Maybe I doing something wrong but GA wont let me add non gmail accounts as users.

  13. Emil says:

    Hi Brent,

We’re looking into this. We’ve heard this mentioned twice, but many users have had no problem adding the user to Analytics. I think you also sent us an email, we can keep the thread going there.

  14. Laura says:

My Analytics dashboard is also only showing spinning icons, even after adding the account profile ID. Any help here on a step I missed, perhaps?

  15. Mike says:

Hi agree – I was hoping that after a year in the “Labs” department the map would show at least North America and not just the US (as I am in Canada).

So close, but not quite there yet :(

What about an option to toggle the map on/off in the meantime? The other numbers are useful – just not the map. Then eventually we could have an option to choose map location.

  16. Emil says:

    Hi Mike,

The reason it’s still in the labs is that we can’t get the API to respond reliably. I agree that that at the very least you should be able to turn the map off.

  17. David says:

I am receiving the same problem as Brent above in this thread. GA wont let me add non gmail accounts as users and so I am unable to add analytics@pagelime.com. If I try to add it Google just changes it to analytics.pagelime@gmail.com. Have you found a solution for this that I missed? I can’t seem to find a solution.

  18. Emil says:

Working on a fix. Analytics changed something on their end, so we have to make some updates.

  19. Emil says:

Hey guys, turns out this is 100% fine. Google is merely aliasing the email, but it should all still work. Are you experiencing trouble once you do add that email?

  20. David says:

Thanks Emil you are right it works even though it changes the address.

I noticed while comparing my data from my Google Analytics account that the Site Visits section of my dashboard in Pagelime is 1 day behind. For instance the Pagelime Site Visits data for the 26th in GA that data shows on the 27th. It’s behind a day on every node in my Site Visits section of my dashboard.

Let me know if you see this on your end. Thanks!

  21. Doug Thwaites says:

    Hi there team,

I apologize in advance i haven’t tried this feature recently and my question may be outdated but to save time testing my question, here goes…

For non us users its awkward having to explain the u.s map when its a white labelled cms.

I understand its is proving a pain to integrate all countries and i’m happy to wait for that but i am wondering is there anyway to enable analytics and just hide all mention of the U.S map.

    Cheers

    Doug T
