New Labs Feature: Image Optimization

Holy rusted metal Batman! You can now sharpen, resize, adjust colors, and make the pictures in your image gallery totally awesome!

We realized that a major frustration that users have with CMS tools is it the lack of ability to update raw images captured by a digital camera or grabbed off of a stock photo site. Do I really need to get someone with a Photoshop license to resize, cut, and add some punch to the images on my site? I just feel that’s ridiculous.  So early on, we decided that PageLime would have some flavor of image editing capabilities. We already have the zoom-crop feature to help users with fitting large images into small areas, but we always envisioned a micro-photoshop, embedded right into PageLime.

So today, we finally released a labs feature that adds a pretty neat image editor to the image gallery. The editor allows you to do some basic operations on your images:

  1. Crop, Resize & Rotate
  2. Blur / Sharpen
  3. Optimize Colors
  4. Apply various fun image effects

In order to try this feature out, you have to go to the site features screen, and enable image optimization under the “labs features” as shown below:5

Once enabled, you can optimize images by clicking the OPTIMIZE button when you roll over a thumbnail in the gallery.  This will open up the image editor, where you can apply the image changes hit save to update the image in the gallery. Take a look at the sequence of screenshots at the end of the post for a quick example.

That’s it for today. Happy Editing!234
